SMDI Salutes You

The Star-Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key in 1814 after the sight of the American flag flowing freely after the attack of Fort McHenry during the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. The poem later became the United States National Anthem as adopted by Congress in 1931.

In it, the words, “the land of the free and the home of the brave,” stick out in the minds of most because America is the land of the free and the home of the brave. But what makes this statement true? It’s the thousands of American soldiers who dedicate their lives to serving and protecting our country. As millions of Americans go to work every day, our service members go to work on the battlefield, placing themselves in harm’s way to protect the freedom of millions of Americans they’ve never met.
