Earth Day Special: What You Need to Know About Car Emissions

Steel and sustainability go hand in hand, so it’s no wonder why April is steel’s favorite month! This Earth Month, we’re working even harder to be aware and care, resulting in the earth’s welfare! When we think how eco-friendly our driving habits are, we might realize we could make a few green tweaks here and there. While there are many we can make, a few quick tweaks are to understand what car emissions are, and to take small steps to become more environmentally conscious, like being more aware when purchasing or leasing our next vehicle!

Earth DayYes, we need our vehicle to get from point A to point B, but do you realize our driving habits getting from A to B may impact the earth? What we need to do is be mindful of our environmentally poor habits and understand why it’s important to care about emissions. What driving habits should we break? Simple – quit the hard accelerations, lighten the trunk load, and avoid the “gas-brake-gas” foot dance. Taking these small steps can lessen the burden our cars have on the earth leaving Mother Nature and ourselves much happier and healthier! The next step to a cleaner environment is to understand exactly what vehicle emissions are and why we should care about them.

Do you remember learning about the gases nitrogen, oxygen, and CO2, and what about carbon monoxide in your high school chemistry course? These gases are exactly what make up vehicle emissions. They aren’t only emitted by our tailpipes while driving, but also when we fuel our cars. Some evaporative gases even escape when it’s parked! While we cannot control these emissions, our bad driving habits increase these gases in the air, some of which are harmful, so ultimately we have the power to create a healthier environment. It’s time to take a stand this Earth Month and be mindful of what we can each do to reduce our emissions.

Although many Earth Day activities are great to help Mother Nature temporarily, we urge you to look at the bigger picture and begin aiding her with long-term changes. One easy way to make an environmentally good choice is to check out all the steel-intensive vehicles next time you’re at the dealership.
